Subject -- Basic concepts:
Concepts of inductance, capacitance, resistance, and various factors affecting them. Concepts of current, energy, voltage, power, and their units.

Subject -- Circuit law:
Kirchhoff’s law and some Simple Circuit solution using network theorems.

Subject -- Magnetic Circuit:
Concepts of flux, reluctance, mmf, Different kinds of magnetic materials. Magnetic calculations for conductors of different configuration e.g. circular, straight, solenoidal, etc. Electromagnetic induction, mutual induction and self Induction.

Subject -- AC Fundamentals:
Instantaneous, R.M.S. peak, and average values of alternating waves, Representation of sinusoidal wave form, simple series AC and parallel AC Circuits consisting of R.L. and C, Tank Circuit, Resonance. 3 phase power, DC Poly Phase system – star and delta connection, and sinusoidal response of R-Land R-C circuit.

Subject -- Measurement and measuring instruments:
Measurement of power and energy and 2 wattmeter method of 3 phase power measurement. Measurement of phase angle and Frequency. Ammeter and Voltmeter, Wattmeter, Extension of range, Multimeters, Energy meter AC Bridges Megger. Use of CRO, CT, Signal Generator, PT and their use. Earth’s Fault detection.

Subject -- Electrical Machines:
(a) D.C. Machine – Basic Principles of D.C. motors and generators, Construction, their characteristics and starting of D.C. Motors, speed control. Method of braking motor, Losses and efficiency of D.C. Machines.
(b) 1 phase and 3 phase transformers –Principles of operation, Construction, Losses and efficiency. Parallel operation of 1 phase / 3 phase transformers. Effect of voltage, frequency and wave form on losses. Auto transformers.
(c) 3 phase induction motors, principle of operation, rotating magnetic field, equivalent circuit, starting and speed control of 3 phase induction motors, torque-speed characteristics.

Subject -- Estimation and costing:
Electric installation of machines and relevant IE rules. Estimation of lighting scheme, Earthing practices and IE Rules.

Subject -- Utilization of Electrical Energy:
Electric heating, Illumination, Electric welding, Electric drives and motors, Electroplating.

Subject -- Basic Electronics:
Working of various electronic devices e.g. Transistors (NPN and PNP type), P N Junction diodes, JFET and BJT. And some Simple circuits using these devices.
